NAFL 2B
BYM 3 – 1 St Matthews
The YM picked up their first 3 points of the season after a hard fought, but well deserved, win away to St Matthews.
As they have in the majority of matches this season, the YM started brightly and pressured St Matthews high in their half and were almost rewarded instantly as Crooks nicked the ball only to see his chance well saved.
St Matthews had a great chance to take the lead 15 mins in but Patterson made a great save to tip it on to the bar.
The YM broke the deadlock with 35mins gone, Crooks hounded their keeper into a mistake as the ball rebounded off him into the net.
5 mins later that same pressure paid off again, this time Howell robbing the keeper and calmly dribbling the ball over the line.
As half time neared the YM stretched their lead to 3. A whipped free kick by Hill, flicked into the back of the net by Crooks.
In the second half, and against the wind, the YM faced a rejuvenated St Matthews side who made great use of the conditions to keep the team penned in their own half and they pulled a goal back following a scramble on the edge of the box.
They almost pulled a 2nd back but for a fantastic diving save from Patterson.
With 25 mins to go, Mcbride was unjustly sent off after receiving his 2nd booking of the afternoon but the team dug deep and defended resolutely to get the win.
